The World Is Your Classroom
I am a very firm believer in the value of taking a Gap Year after High School, and before entering College/University. This is for most young people the biggest transition in their lives until that point. They stand to gain a lot from Gap Year Consultation services.
It’s a transition that comes with multiple developmental challenges. The High School graduate is now called on to attend to all these challenges at the same time. There are the challenges related to independence, responsibility, and maturity; others related to identity and social belonging, yet others related to cognitive development. Then there are the challenges related to sexual identity, and for some, questions regarding gender identity. Given all these developmental demands, is there any wonder that many students find themselves struggling during their first year at University?
As part of my clinical psychology practice, I now offer consultations to explore specific developmental needs, as well as personal growing edges and interests, to possibly be attended to during a Gap Year. If you, or someone you know, could benefit from this service, please feel free to contact me. Together we’ll explore how to turn a demanding challenge into a rewarding opportunity for real growth.
Real growth, and real world experiences can happen in many places – the world can absolutely be a wonderful classroom – whether that is volunteering for a local organization at home; working to earn money for college; working at a farm in Nepal; teaching kids English in a village in Chile; working with AmeriCorps or CityYear somewhere in the world; taking a Postgraduate school bridge year; volunteering for a political campaign; studying Spanish in Salamanca, Spain … the possibilities are endless.
